You may have seen or heard that Christchurch had a major 7.1 magnitude earthquake on the 4th September 2010, causing an estimated total cost of NZ$6 billion in damage. Fortunately there was no loss of life in the city and environs of 380,000 people. In some parts of Christchurch, there was serious damage to homes and buildings, land, sewerage systems, drainage, water supply and roads. Other parts of the city were hardly affected. As our aftershocks continue, approximately 2,800 at last count, there has been more damage to properties not to mention the frayed nerves of the residents.
The Christchurch City Chorus of 155 members has experienced the full range of effects; some losing homes, some awaiting assessment of the damage to their homes and may be without water and sewerage facilities for months; some have experienced loss of income. Others have had few direct effects, and are doing their best to assist those friends who have been seriously affected.
How could you help?
Chorus fundraising has taken on a new special significance as we look to help our members who have been badly affected. As one of our major fundraisers, the chorus has produced a 2011 Calendar: "Delicious Women". Each month features artwork by a local artist inspired by the women in songs from our repertoire, along with seasonal recipes compiled by a talented cook who is a member of our chorus. The calendars would make great gifts. Orders can be placed on our website
Our chorus has always supported the Christchurch City Mission and the work it does in helping the homeless and poor in our city. However since the earthquake many new people have turned to the City Mission for help. We have a link from our website for anyone wishing to make a donation to them to help with earthquake relief.
If you would like any further information please contact us.
Our director too, Virginia Humphrey-Taylor, sends her warmest greetings.
